    Phonics Phase 1 planning

This is great we have printed it out and we use daily for the Nursery children for a short Phonics activity. It has saved me loads of time and is really well thought out and each activity is clearly explained so the staff know what to do. Each time they teach Phonics they are becoming more confident with presenting.

    FAQs

Why is my mud cake not cooking? ›

The secret to moist (but not too moist) mud cake

If your mud cake isn't cooking in the middle, it needs longer baking. Often lower oven temperatures aren't too accurate; the longer slower baking won't hurt the cake. Mud cakes are high in fat and sugar, and they can develop a sugary crust during baking.

Why is it called a mud cake? ›

The name "mudcake" is derived from its resemblance to mud, owing to its dark color and dense consistency. The cake is typically made with ingredients such as butter, sugar, eggs, flour, and chocolate, resulting in a luxurious and decadent treat that is adored by dessert enthusiasts worldwide.

What happens if your cake is tough and compact? ›

Toughness in cakes is caused by over-mixing, or the wrong type of flour. Solution: Mix your cake according to the recipe. There is a function to the order in which ingredients are added to create the right texture. As soon as you begin mixing flour with a liquid and a fat, gluten is developed.

Why does wacky cake work? ›

Yet, despite these 'wacky' differences, the cake is a delicious dessert. Why does wacky cake work? An eggless cake batter relies on the gluten structure of the flour and the lift provided by vinegar and baking soda.

Should mud cake batter be runny? ›

Runny mixture - Your mixture should be very thin and runny before pouring it into the baking tins. Cooking time - All ovens are slightly different so you may need to increase your cooking time slightly.

How do you know when mud cake is done? ›

After baking, our Pastry Chefs test the bake the traditional way by applying a skewer inserted into the centre of each cake. If the skewer comes out clean then the cake is considered baked and set aside to cool completely.

Why is my mud cake dry? ›

Reducing sugar too much can cause a dry, tight texture as you have described. It is also possible that dividing the batter into two tins at too high baking temperature, especially in a fan oven, may have contributed to the cakes turning out so crumbly. The Sugar and Crumb icing sugars do have a robust flavour.

What is the secret to a good cake? ›

    • Prep the ingredients. Have all of the ingredients at room temperature, unless the recipe directs otherwise. ...
    • Use the right flour. ...
    • Prep your pans. ...

Can I use both butter and oil in cake? ›

If you were to use exclusively oil, the cake would turn out much denser than you may have intended. If you're unsure, it's safest to use a 50/50 combination of butter and oil instead of replacing the butter completely.

What makes a cake fluffy vs dense? ›

Butter is capable of holding air and the creaming process is when butter traps that air. While baking, that trapped air expands and produces a fluffy cake. No properly creamed butter = no air = no fluffiness. Aka a dense cake.

Why is it called depression cake? ›

Depression Cake, also known as Wacky Cake or War Cake (among other names), originated in the Great Depression. It is a cake made without milk, eggs, or butter. These were all ingredients that were hard to come by during the Great Depression and at wartime.

What is a goofy cake? ›

Rich chocolate cake coated in thick chocolate ganache.

How do you fix a cake that won't cook? ›

If your cake is not cooking in the middle, then put it back into the oven and cover tightly in tin foil. The tin foil will trap the heat and help to cook the inside of your cake. Bake for another 10-15 minutes and check after 5-7 mins to make sure it's working.

Why is my cake uncooked from inside? ›

Your oven may be too cool or you may have used a pan that's too small or the shape not called for (a loaf pan instead of a layer-cake pan.) Whatever the cause, the cure is longer baking. Originally Answered: Baking: Why does my cake remains uncooked in the middle while it is cooked on the sides?

Why is my cake still gooey in the middle? ›

A cake that's wet in the middle, in most cases, has not baked long enough. Put it back in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Be sure to check every 5 minutes with the toothpick test for any changes. If sliced, cover with aluminum foil to prevent the top from browning even more.
