Spatial data visualization is a powerful tool to convey complex and dynamic information in a clear and engaging way. Whether you want to show the impact of climate change, urban growth, social movements, or any other phenomenon that involves spatial and temporal dimensions, you can use geographic information systems (GIS) to create compelling maps, charts, and animations that tell a story. In this article, you will learn some basic principles and techniques to use spatial data visualization to communicate change over time.

1 Why visualize change over time?

Spatial data visualization can help you answer questions such as: How has the landscape changed over the years? Where are the hotspots of activity or risk? What are the trends and patterns of movement or behavior? How do different variables interact or correlate over space and time? By visualizing change over time, you can reveal insights, patterns, and relationships that might otherwise be hidden or difficult to comprehend. You can also use visualization to communicate your findings, hypotheses, or recommendations to different audiences, such as stakeholders, decision-makers, or the general public.

2 How to choose the right data and format?

Before you start creating your spatial data visualization, you need to consider what data you have and what format is best suited for your purpose and audience. Depending on the type and quality of your data, you may need to perform some preprocessing, such as cleaning, filtering, aggregating, or transforming your data. You also need to decide what level of detail and granularity you want to display, and how to handle missing or uncertain data. Next, you need to choose the right format for your visualization, such as static or interactive maps, charts, or animations. You should consider the advantages and limitations of each format, such as the ease of use, the level of interactivity, the scalability, and the compatibility with different platforms and devices.

3 How to design effective spatial data visualization?

Once you have your data and format ready, you need to design your spatial data visualization in a way that is clear, accurate, and appealing. You should follow some general principles of data visualization, such as choosing appropriate colors, symbols, scales, and legends; avoiding clutter and distortion; and providing context and annotations. You should also pay attention to some specific aspects of spatial data visualization, such as the projection, the coordinate system, the spatial reference, and the spatial analysis methods. You should use these elements to enhance the spatial and temporal dimensions of your data, not to obscure or misrepresent them.

It is best to decide how you want the data to be displayed. When using polygon data, it can be choropleth, dot density, graduated symbols, or proportional symbols. It is best to use color ramps that can better show the intensity or the higher frequencies of changes.

4 How to use animation and interactivity?

One of the most powerful features of spatial data visualization is the ability to use animation and interactivity to show change over time. Animation can help you create a dynamic and engaging visualization that captures the attention and curiosity of your audience. You can use animation to show the evolution, movement, or transition of your data over time, such as the spread of a disease, the growth of a city, or the change of a climate variable. Interactivity can help you create a flexible and responsive visualization that allows your audience to explore and manipulate your data. You can use interactivity to provide different views, filters, zooms, or selections of your data, such as the comparison of different scenarios, the selection of different regions, or the customization of different parameters.

I was able to make a gif animation to show the population change in Virginia over time. When I finished making a series of maps showing the population change from 1940 to 2010, I used Adobe Photoshop to combine all of the map products to show a continuous animation. It worked the best with the dot density map.

5 How to evaluate and improve your spatial data visualization?

The final step of creating your spatial data visualization is to evaluate and improve it. You should test your visualization with different data sets, devices, and browsers, and check for any errors, glitches, or inconsistencies. You should also solicit feedback from your intended audience, and see if they can understand, interpret, and use your visualization as intended. You should ask yourself and your audience some questions, such as: Does the visualization answer the question or convey the message you want? Is the visualization clear, accurate, and consistent? Is the visualization engaging, interactive, and accessible? How can you improve the visualization to make it more effective, efficient, or appealing?
