1 Plan your content

Before you start designing your brochure, you need to plan your content carefully. Think about what your main message is, what your goals are, and who your readers are. Then, decide on the format, size, and shape of your brochure, and how many pages or panels it will have. Next, organize your content into sections, such as an introduction, a problem statement, a solution, a call to action, and a contact information. Use headings, subheadings, and bullet points to break down your text into manageable chunks. Finally, write your content in a simple, direct, and persuasive language, and avoid jargon, fluff, and filler words.

The first step in creating an easily navigable brochure is thorough content planning. Understand your core message, objectives, and target audience. Decide on the brochure format, size, shape, and the number of pages or sections it will have. Organize your content into distinct sections such as an introduction, problem statement, solution, call-to-action, and contact information. Utilize headings, subheadings, and bullet points to break your text into manageable sections. Write your content in a clear, direct, and compelling language, avoiding jargon, fluff, and filler words.

After planning your content for your audience, you need to consider in what form they want to receive it. Do you need to print it at all? Some content is expected online and needs to be to reach your audience. But there is some content where your audience will appreciate and seek out printed material. But what print format suits your audience - and your content? Does it need to stand out against competitors? Does it need to last? Does it need to be waterproof? Will it be a multipage document or a single sheet flyer? Would a folded poster with a hero image on one side and smaller 'pages' of content on the back suit? Where will they pick it up? Or will it be delivered and need to be the right weight and size for an envelope? Then design it.

2 Choose your colors and fonts

The colors and fonts you use in your brochure can affect how your readers perceive your brand, mood, and message. Choose colors that match your brand identity, complement each other, and create contrast and hierarchy. Use no more than three colors in your brochure, and apply them consistently throughout. Choose fonts that are legible, readable, and suitable for your tone and style. Use no more than two fonts in your brochure, and use different sizes, weights, and styles to create emphasis and distinction. Avoid fonts that are too fancy, decorative, or hard to read.

I recommend selecting colors and fonts thoughtfully for your brochure. Align the colors with your brand identity, ensuring harmony and hierarchy. Limit the palette to three colors for consistency. Choose legible fonts, keeping it to a maximum of two styles. Vary sizes and weights for emphasis, avoiding overly decorative fonts. This approach ensures your brochure effectively communicates your brand's message while maintaining readability and visual appeal.

3 Use images and graphics

Images and graphics can enhance your brochure by adding visual interest, illustrating your points, and supporting your message. Use high-quality, relevant, and original images and graphics that match your brand and content. Use images and graphics sparingly, and avoid cluttering your brochure with too many or too large elements. Use white space, margins, and alignment to create balance and harmony in your layout. Use captions, labels, and icons to explain your images and graphics, and make sure they are aligned with your text.

4 Create a clear layout

A clear layout can help your readers navigate your brochure easily and effectively. Use a grid system to divide your brochure into columns and rows, and place your elements according to the grid. Use guides, rulers, and margins to align your elements and create consistency. Use fold lines, page numbers, and headers and footers to indicate the structure and order of your brochure. Use visual cues, such as arrows, lines, and shapes, to direct your readers' attention and guide them through your brochure.

A reminder for every organization: invest in quality photography before you need it. For a brochure (and other media), nothing beats good images. The difference between good and bad images is substantial and can make all the difference in the final outcome.

It is really important to think about interactivity between panels. I see a lot of brochures where type goes across folds. You really have to think about composition and how the viewer's eye is going to move through the piece. The hierarchy of copy needs to follow that movement. Elements need to align between panels to support that journey. It all needs to work together to control the experience of the piece.

Be sure to use negative space or white space to draw attention to where it needs to be. You see some brochures that are really 'busy', blasted with content like a photo album, which can be an obstacle to navigation. What's not there (absent) is just as important as what is.A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. 5 Test and print your brochure

Before you print your brochure, you need to test it for any errors, inconsistencies, or issues. Proofread your text for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and clarity. Check your images and graphics for resolution, color, and size. Check your layout for alignment, spacing, and balance. Print a mock-up of your brochure and fold it to see how it looks and feels in real life. Ask for feedback from others and make any necessary changes. Finally, print your brochure using a professional printer, and choose the right paper, ink, and finish for your brochure.

When it comes to printing booklets and brochures, we always provide sample copies for our clients. This is one of the great advantages of digital printing – it allows for fast, one-off hard proofs for human quality checks. This helps to prevent any unpleasant surprises that can sometimes occur with automated processes. We've all experienced disappointment after buying print online, which is why we prioritise this personal touch!

Our company has always been heavily involved in Print design. That's actually a specific discipline and skillset that is rarer today, as graphic designers are spread so thin across digital media and other mediums. The point being, designers are increasingly unfamiliar with print industry terminology.Talk to your print partner. Ask for a 'wet proof' or a 'press dummy'. You can lookup print terms online, or simply build a good relationship with a printer who will onboard you, sharing the terms they use (as they do differ from press to press).

Understand production details.Brochures vary in size, shape, folds and number of panels or pages. Once you understand how the product is going to be printed, you can get clear on how it will be viewed by others. You can then determine what information and visuals should be revealed in the order as it unfolds. This can also give you clarity on opportunities to break up heavy content with images and other design elements to create blank space that decreases cluttered pages or panels as you dive deeper into the design.
